The Village of Tavernelle.
Tavernelle lies in the Tavarone valley in Lunigiana, the heart of historic northern Tuscany, set against a backdrop of the Appenine mountains.
The village has a bar, an excellent family run restaurant/pizzeria, a butchers shop and grocery. A travelling bread shop arrives with a fanfare each morning, and fruit/vegetable, grocery and fish shops also arrive on set days during the week.
The river allows swimming in cold rock pools, sunbathing and scrambling upstream through pools, eddies and falls. The mountains and forests offer a large choice of trekking paths, well-marked and suitable for all skill or energy levels!
The Lunigiana Region of Tuscany.
Lunigiana lies in northern Tuscany, between Liguria on the coast and the hinterland of Emilia Romagna. The region was formerly the fiefdom of the Malaspina family, and is characterised by their castles or fortessas, most notably at Fosdinovo, Aulla, Pontremoli, Carrara and many more.
Within an easy drive or train journey you will find the cities of Lucca, Pisa, Florence, the beautiful towns of Fosdinovo and Sarzana and the local regional capitals of Massa and Carrara. The coastal wonders of the Cinque Terre villages, Lerici, and the ferry to Portovenere and Portofino are all less than an hour away.
It’s the essence of Italy – wonderful landscapes, good food and wine, great value and a warm Italian welcome.
